Cafe Sao Nicolau

My experience here was not bad at all, but I think it's overhyped to be in consideration of all the wonderful food in Porto. Pros: friendly and attentive service. the location is great, it is away from the main flow change. the interior is very small, but beautiful. the cod coquettes were fantastic Cons: ready to wait. We arrived at noon when they opened (we had no reservation) and there were already four more couples waiting for a table. this place fills quickly. I ordered the highly rated octopus with rice and found it just good. the octopus was well cooked, but a little overcrowded for my taste. the rice was nothing special my husband got the cod and it was not very good. the sauce was very oily and the boiled egg was far over boiled. the fish itself was delicious and well cooked. overall the experience was good, but not worth the hype.

This is a restaurant you need to try once you are in Porto. The dishes are delicious. Very recommend the grilled king prawn and prawn in garlic sauce, also the octopus rice is very interesting and delicious. We try to come day before and they are packed and happy to try again day after day to get a table. Better book a table or you can wait at the end. Alternatively try to get from the peak time and easier to get a table.

came over this restaurant over a local reviewer. We were lucky to have a table just before lunch. Delicious dishes, but slightly salty and oily for my taste. We had the octopus salads and cod with potatoes.

This restaurant was rather disappointing when you look at the reviews. There was something in every court. Big portions for the shrimps, but it was too salty. The seafood rice had a bitter taste, without taste depth and so watery. Rather expensive compared to other restaurants, the better quality and culinary experience. I understand it's busy in the restaurant, but I don't advise future diners to shut down, as unfortunately it wasn't worth waiting.

Highly recommended. Food was incredible. I had the veal stew and my partner had the prawns in garlic sauce. Both were unbelievable and portion size for both was on the large side of things. Service was very quick and really friendly! Would highly recommend, and book ahead of time if possible. Otherwise get there early.

This is a great spot near enough to all the popular restaurants but far enough away not to pay tourist prices. Just down the road you would pay three times the price for food that wasn’t as good as here.
