We were on our way to the north of the country, passing through the region of Castelo Branco, and wanted to find a good place to eat near Vila Velha de Rodão, where we hoped to catch a glimpse of the Portas de Rodão. A lot of the local (Portuguese only) magazines online and blogs recommended this restaurant, so we gave it a try. The village where it 's located is a little bit out of the way, but the road gives out stunning views so we were not discouraged. The restaurant itself is just on the entrance to the tiny village, so it was easy to find. We found the design cosy, friendly, and very pleasant. The table was set decently, and we were welcomed by a friendly lady. There was no menu, but she told us what was the dish for the day. Soon after, she brought us two small dishes to start and freshly baked bread in a huge basket. This was a very impressive start 2 cheese dishes one was fresh cheese with olive paté and the other was goat soft cheese with strawberry sauce, and the bread was very good. We ate everything, and she came with even more bread saying we could have as much as we wanted she even left the big basket still half full nearby. Those starters were two of the best starters we 've ever had. And this was just the beginning... For the main course, she came with a huge dish of meat, potatoes and cabbage the meat was good and tender enough, potatoes with the tomato dressing on top was just okay, but the cabbage lowly as it is, was perfectly done. We couldn 't even manage half of the dish, not only because we had stuffed ourselves with the starters, but also because the dish was huge. We were almost bursting, but very much impressed with everything so far, we thought we shouldn 't pass up the dessert, for it was bound to be very good as well. So the lady brought what they had for the day and yes, it was as perfect as the rest. And a lot, too! (See photos below). It goes without saying that we had a good jug of red wine, and coffee afterwards. Not only did we enjoy the food, the friendly service, the location but we also appreciated very much the atmosphere there were magazines and good art and culture books about the region, including some signed works by an artist who is from the region. It was a place to satisfy not just one 's belly, but also to feed one 's soul, let 's say. As for the meal, we paid a very reasonable price, I don 't remember how much, but much lower than what we would have paid for the same quality closer to or in the city. We didn 't need to break a bank to pay for all that goodness. It 's a place I would love to return to, and would not hesitate to bring others to, for any occasion or just to enjoy a place where they know how to bring out the best in the ingredients abundant in the region. Highly recommended!
