Gaivota

We were part of a west tour of the island and our guide recommended this place for a meal, courses for Euro. I have never tasted such disgusting food in my life, and I've eaten a lot. The vegetable soup to start looked...like wallpaper paste, and tasted horrible. The steak was so bland served with limp salad and anemic chips. How this place survives is beyond me. Avoid

We visited Porto Moniz yesterday during our holiday in Funchal on Madeira. A bus took us to the other side, the northwest, of the island. It was cold and windy and we decided to spend our time in this restaurant. We enjoyed the meal. We...had soup, bread, grilled pork and tuna pizza half a bottle of white Planalto wine. The service was good and friendly. They made some mistakes with the bill, left out some items. After mentioning this they added a little more to the bill, still not enough to ‘cover their costs’. A kind gesture. Try it out

We visited Porto Moniz during a West tour of the island starting from Funchal. The worst part of the tour was the lunch at this place. The tour company sold this to us as a bargain (three course meal with unlimited drinks for EUR)...but it turned out to be a waste of money. For the same money we had much better food and service in Funchal. I wish I had the chance to read the reviews before to accept this lunch option

All the drivers of tours take their clients to this place while they seem to get a kick back (in free food? Though why they would want to eat here I don't know). Avoid it. You don't have to eat here. There are far superior...cafes restaurants in Porto Moniz. You have been warned

We were on an organised tour and the guide booked us in for lunch at Gaivota. We were not expecting much as normally tour recommended places are not the best. This was better than most and the food was edible. We got a course...lunch, wine and coffee for a head. At that price it was not the Ritz but I have paid more and got worse

Unfortunately when you go to a place recommended by a tour guide you're given one of the worst tables in the place. There were only four of us who opted for this lunch (a set lunch at a set price), and while the food was...okay (we've had better, ours was standard bus tour fare), we were given an awful table with absolutely no view. The better tables and the patio tables were reserved for independent travellers. The saving grace was that we so enjoyed the company of the other couple we ate with that it really didn't matter but be warned if you're taking a tour guide's recommendation. I'm sure there were much better places to eat

I was here for lunch a couple of days ago, I found it strange when we walked in and the place was empty, but soon figured out why! We chose two portions of octopus, bread and a bottle of wine. They were rather quick in...serving the food, probably heated in the microwave. We didn't have any napkins on the table and I had to get up and go to the counter to pick up a couple of napkins. Overall, the food wasn't tasteful and later that day we found out why... We got food poisoning from the octopus, we had strong tummy aches, headaches and diarrhea that lasted until yesterday! It's a place never to return again
